Why it matters
Rising tourism drives economic growth and vibrancy, but it also brings a hidden cost—mounting plastic waste. With 1.99 million tourists visiting in FY23, the city generates nearly 37 tonnes of plastic waste every day, of which an estimated 382 tonnes come from tourists alone. Alarmingly, only about 45% of this plastic is recycled, leaving the rest to pollute lakes, heritage sites, and natural ecosystems. Every visitor and every local is not just a spectator, but an active participant in shaping the city's future. Responsible choices, collective action, and sustainable practices can turn tourism into a force for preservation rather than pollution. The time to act—together—is now.
